WordPress Semiologic Pro Theme Tip #5

Here is tip #5 of using the WordPress Semiologic Pro theme and, this one will appeal to those bloggers who favor using Google AdSense as a way to monetize their WordPress blogs.

In my view, Ad Spaces is one of the most powerful Virtual Real Estate ad placement blogging plugins around and if like me, you are one of those people who got tired of trying to make AdSense Deluxe work on your site, then this is definately for you …

Ad Spaces enables you to place ads within your blog post or page but even better, it enables you to easily place ads within the canvas of the blog software.  By canvas, I mean within the header, footer, in the sidebar, below the entries, above the entries, below each title and even above the canvas.

I admit that I didn’t use the Ad Spaces feature of Semiologic in the early days of using it, because I just didn’t understand it.  However, after my frustrations with the AdSense Deluxe plugin, Denis de Bernardy, the developer of Semiologic walked me through the process of using the plugin, step-by-step and then I wondered how I lived without it.

One feature that I only discovered recently is the Rotating Ad Units and Ad Distribution function.  Now, if you are an AdSense user and particuarly if you’ve ever read any of Joel Comm’s material, you’ll undertand that where you place your ads on your website or blog, is as important as getting lots of visitors to your site.  After all, if you’re wanting to monetize with ads then what is the point of bringing in a deluge of visitors and none of them click on your AdSense or affilaite ads.  And, I know there are tools out there to help you monitor the best place for your ads, but with Ad Spaces, you can set it to automatically rotate the ads for you.

Now, instead of leaving your ads for a week, checking your affiliate or AdSense stats, changing the ad unit or distribution location and then leaving it for another week , you can enable the Rotating Ad Units and Ad Distribution features  and each of these ads will display with an equal probability to your visitors. You can then compare the revenue earned by each ad over a specific period of time so you can identify which one earns you the most in which location and for which specific site. Now tell me if you don’t think that is so cool!

There are plenty of other features that I haven’t even covered in this blog post, but if Ad Spaces is a plugin that might be of interested to you - and, you don’t even have to be using Semiologic at all to take advantage of this plugin - head over to the Semiologic site and take a look at the powerful features for yourself.  You’ll even be able to download the plugin.

I’d love to hear your feedback on the usefullness of this plugin.
