Make It Easy For People To Comment On Your Blog!

I have just been to a site that was hosted on [tag-tec]Blogger.com[/tag-tec] and I wrote out my comment, ready to hit the submit button and it said “This blog does not allow anonymous comments.”  And what was even worse, was that I had to have a blogger account in order to submit my comment.

Do you think I bothered to comment?  No!

And, I’m not sure what [tag-tec]Blogger.com[/tag-tec] is like now, but in times past, if you signed up and didn’t use the account for a while, your account would be deleted.

No doubt, there have been other people who have gone to leave a comment and did what I did today … hit the back button!

“So what about [tag-tec]spam comments[/tag-tec], Trish” I hear you ask.

There are two things you can do to reduce spam comments showing up in your blog posts:

  1. Use the Akismet plugin
  2. If you’re using WordPress (which I do recommend … and I mean WordPress hosted on your own domain), go to  “Presentation” -> “Discussion” and select “An administrator must always approve the comment.”

This is just a quick tip today, but if you encourage commenting on your blogs, make it easy for people or risk getting no feedback and, losing fresh new content as well as repeat visitors.

I wonder with all the spam blog on Blogger if they aren’t just increasing the ratio of spam comments to good comments by limiting it to blogger accounts?

Thanks for that Trish, I have found that problem also with blogger.com - It must be very frustrating for people who want to comment but cant because they dont have a blogger account.

I also think that many of the people who own a blogger.com blog aren’t aware of the fact that people have to be logged in to comment and then they wonder why there are no comments on their blog.

Great blog you have here also!

    James/Ryan,

I do think there really is a degree of “unfortunate” ignorance amongst bloggers and people just do not do their research before they begin blogging.

When I started seeing the big emergence of blogs online, I spent days trying to find out what most of the online marketers were using for their blogs and though I had a resell rights product showing me how to use Moveable Type, I went with WordPress based on the comments on blogs and reviews.

Blogger.com offers “microwave” blogging - just 2 minutes and you’re online but what people who use blogger.com or hosted blogs with TypePad, Wordpress.com and any other hosted blogs is that they don’t own their blogs. Violate these guys terms of use and they’ll delete your blog.

Sadly, this isn’t limited to blogs either. People spend thousands on websites that are using an online editor and again, they don’t own their site.

The good news for bloggers using hosted solutions is that they can export their blog posts to WordPress or another self hosted blog software but with a website, this is nigh on impossible.

Oh the importance of doing your homework before embarking on any online activity!

    Best to you both,

    Trish

Personally I hate anonymous comments on my blog. They have generally been used to sheild people who say things they would normally not say if they signed their name, even a nickname to their post.

I have never let having to sign in or register keep me from posting a comment if I was so moved to comment initially. I have done that when voting for bloggers for a 2007 Weblog award.

And I make sure that I have to moderate my comments so that I don’t have spam posted on my blog.

    Adrianne,

Isn’t moderating your comments what this is all about? I’ve just moderated this comment … you are required to put your name and email (though not shown) and I have the option of either approving, deleting, spamming the comment and, I can even edit and amend the comment before it’s approved and seen by everyone on the Internet.

I personally don’t want to have to sign up to anything just to comment on someone elses blog and I really don’t think it’s necessary with all the various spam controlling options available today.

I suppose I’m marketing from a personality point of view … there are those who will search on Google 12 pages deep to find what they want, and there are those who will go elseswhere if they have to get to page 3 of Google to find what they are looking for. This is me and I’m sure there are more of us around than there are the diligent type who will move mountains to ensure they post their comment.

Also Adrianne, if you are accustomed to using a hosted blog on blogger then I suppose you may be more inclinded to make that effort. I personally advise both my clients and readers to stay away from hosted blog solutions.

See my video on YouTube for why I give this advice … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LoVDWImq7Y

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Trish
