Not quite sure about the point you are making here but wealth begins in the mind.

Being rich does not have to mean living an extravagent lifestyle and in fact, most people who live this kind of lifestyle are usually not rich or wealthy at all ... they're usually "bragging" about what they don't have and paying through the nose for it with the banks money. :-)

There is also a distinct difference between being wealthy and being rich. Rich is about having money, wealth is all encompassing - money, happiness (in all areas of life including relationships), health and above all, peace.

So long as we reduce wealth to being about "loads of money" we will never achieve it because there will always be something lacking.

"The First Wealth is Health" is something one hears mostly from rich people :)
Emerson lived a financially conservative lifestyle. He had inherited some wealth after his wife's death, though he brought a lawsuit against the Tucker family in 1836 to get it. He received $11,674.79 in July 1837.

I like that Marion ... slog (site blog). Combining your existing static site with a blog is a great way to brand yourself whilst getting some great SEO results as well as building community.

@Peter, I agree with you. It can sometimes be a little time consuming to write unique articles. I don't always find it easy especially when I have a lot of client work on. It's worth it in the end though and it builds more credibility.

Hi Trish

Thank you for posting such a great informative article!
I recently wrote a few articles on the topic which compliments what you said.

My own website is a combination between a traditional website and a blog - some have called it a slog (site blog).
The blogging part do have its advantages as it's very easy and you can add a post very quickly. So much faster than creating pages and then having to upload it.

regards
Marion

Blogging is a great way to get more traffic to the main site. I think the problem is that not many people are willing to sit down and really write interesting and unique and articles, this can be very time consuming for some people.
WordPress and godaddy are very easy way to get started.

I agree with you Rob. I have seen people spend thousands upon thousands on static websites that never bring them any traffic when at least to start with, they could have been getting their message out using a blog and attracting clients at least whilst their static site is being built.

For many small businesses, a blog is all that is needed, but their are still some people who prefer to have a static site too and that's fine so long as their site is being updated some how.

All the best,

Trish

Yes, it's amazing that with all of the technology around, people STILL want to read books and I think it's a message that says print will never cease to exist. I hope you're able to get a ghost writer onto your project soon.

For small businesses there is nothing better than wordpress to start. I am planning to start a blog for my painting work and have found a plugin with which I can integrate my paypal with wordpress. I think that is the best solution i have ever seen so far which is a few clicks ready system.

I know dozen people who hired ghost writers and then they compile their writing in an ebook to earn several thousand dollars. No wonder ebooks and good business models can earn someone millions. Although I can't do this at the moment but it is my biggest goal to achieve.

Hi Leon,

I'm familiar with the setup with the trailing slash but never come across the other. Either way, I'm not aware that it affects SEO. The important thing is to make it easy for the search engine spiders to find your content.

Best,

Trish

Hi Trish,

I stumble over you on YouTube and I was taken by your straight talk, no bull approach to blogging. And that is exactly what I was looking for.

I have a particular problem. I got a website built for me by a web designer. Now that it is finished I am at a lost as to how to upload news items, articles and videos to the web pages. I have heard of WordPress and my question is how I adopt WordPress to my website. I downloaded WordPress and even went as far as to paste some article on the post or write page. Now how do I get something from WordPress to publish on my website? I do not want to stay in WordPress blog page, I want to use WordPress as a vehicle to post articles to www.ghanascope.net and I don’t know how to do it. I hope you could help me.

Sincerely,

Eric

Trish, I think this post holds tremendous value.

My biggest stopping point is time management crossed with book structure. I've published dozens of articles and can easily do so, however the thought of slapping together a book feels daunting.

I believe its because I often cut to the chase and leave out the "filler" when I write.

Thanks again, its left me with more to ponder on :)

Great site you have there Vincent and I agree with you - you can't trust anybody with your promotional product campaigns.

You have some great items on your site and I have to say, I used to work for an insurance company and they used to give us items of their promo products. I left the company 7 years ago and we are still using some of the products they gave us.

They must have used a company like yours!! Quality products!

I don't promote other people's products in my comments, but to my readers, this site is worth checking out, particularly if you're going to be doing the Christmas gifts promotion: http://www.promoproductsolutions.com

All the best Vincent,

Trish

Sadly, there are still people just getting into Internet Marketing who have very little idea about how best to promote their business online and will just go with what a webmaster suggests. Also, not every webmaster is conversent with blogs and blogging and are more comfortable with sticking to what they know and so this is what they offer their clients.

There are still occasions when you might use a static website such as a salespage, and, some people just prefer to have a static website and a blog in the subdirectory. If you know how to marketing a website, then this is an okay option but for most service professionals a blog is all they need.

Hope this helps.

You should be link building, you should be promoting your business and your blog but how you build your links is what this post was discussing.

It really is a matter of personal choice if you use tools such as 3 way links to build your business, but my personal view is that natural linkbuilding is a longer term strategy and I don't want to do anything that's going to get me penalised by the search engines.

Hi. Thanks for the great article. I personally don't see link building as un-ethical - as long as the content is high quality and pertains to the topics. There's notjhing worng with promotying your site or your business. Thanks!

Thanks for this information. I was actually wondering which one is better...a blog or a website. And now that I know a blog is far better than a static website, now I have started to wonder why then people are still making static websites and why there are so many of them still around. Are there some plus points in a static website that a blog lacks?

Hi Trish - this is a really good post. I've thought about joining a linking scheme. I didn't used to care about PR. But I'm noticing that blogs with higher Page Ranks have an easier time getting to number one for their seach phrases.

Often they can do it without having the keyphrase in their title. And it does make it difficult to compete.

But as you are saying - Google quickly catches onto these schemes and you could be penalized. It's a shame. I get plenty of inbound links. The trouble is, most of them are worthless as a lot of folk don't use keywords in the links. Most just link to my name, which isn't much use.

I've heard scary stories about GoDaddy but I have never had an issue with them in all the years I've used them and so I have no cause for concern.

In fact, on two occasions, I have had need to call them about my error with registering the wrong domain name and with no questions asked, they gave me a refund.

I don't recommend GoDaddy's hosting but I'm okay with recommending their domain registration service.

That said, I'm always open to other people's recommendations though so thanks!

I'm surprised you advice godaddy for a domain name, ok, they're cheap, but I just don't trust them, each time I try to transfer a doasmin they seem to have 'technical' problems and then propose that you create an account with them instead ... very suspicious ...

Hi Richard,

I read somewhere only days ago that Google have officially declared that they are not giving much notice to reciprocal linking or directory submissions, something that I'm certain they encouraged in the past. As far as I can see, they want "natural" link building as much as possible.

I'm happy with it being that way though because in today's blogosphere, quality content get's noticed so all those adsense sites that are there purely to make money will lose their value.

All the best Richard,

Trish

It seems like Google is devaluing directory links more and more these days. I completely agree with you that quality content that produces natural links will no doubt produce better long terms results then directory submission.

It's a matter of preference Taylor and I do envy those who can use Dreamweaver ... I gave it a try many times and gave up. I can use FrontPage easily but don't like it ... messy code!

I really do dislike putting up my webpages with FP though so perhaps I ought to give dreamweaver another try.

Thanks for the post,

Trish

alright, did not allow me to use the code so I am going to try again with the .

Great tip! But keep in mind that if you use the element, without the span opening element, your code will no longer validate to current w3c web standards. However, there is another easy fix that is valid.

Use: Tag: li style="border-bottom:10px"> Something "Close Li Element.

or, you can add the above command to your CSS file…hope this helps somebody.

Hi Sam,

I totally agree with your comment about incorporating search engine optimiztion during the development process of building a site. I think people think you're arrogant when you tell them that you have to be involved during the development phase because all they can see is the "nice looking site." But, as you and I know, "nice looking sites" don't necessarily make money.

The sad thing is, once the website developer has done his fancy stuff, it's usually too late to incorporate SEO properly without diggin up some of the design foundation.

Thanks for the valuable input Sam,

Trish

Health is the most thing in our life, because if we dont have good health we cant be happy. And we just kill ourselves eating processed foods and "low fat" foods. First we must understand, that everything should be in balance: our mind, body and soul. And after that we will reach good results.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Sometimes a site's structure (the relationships between its content) must be altered too. Because of this it is, from a client's perspective, always better to incorporate Search Engine Optimization when a website is being developed than to try and retroactively apply it.

I can't agree with your ideas more Trish. I still feel that legit affiliate linking can still drive good traffic to your site. This of course still needs to be done tastefully or you end up with an ad farm.

There are many ways for search engines to spider your web site now days, with very advanced scripting. As far as you handing anything to them on a platter you may have, if they also scan for keywords for things like 3-way linking, etc. We may never know for sure...but I bet they do scan in that method also.

Awesome working with you Trish, you are such a knowledgeable person!

Hey, the new design looks good. I did notice on the top right corner of the home page is the DHTML menu with the social connections and then it says tab 1 and tab 2. It might look a bit better to remove those two extra tabs until you can add some content. Also, That would be a good spot for advertisements where you could put the social networking links somewhere closer to the bottom.

Also, That would be a good spot for advertisements where you could put the social networking links somewhere closer to the bottom.

@Dave@BBQ recipes: Thanks Dave,

I think that's why I'd prefer to go for the paid directories but keep a lookout, I have a post coming up on Google devaluing DMOZ and Yahoo links. Interesting ...

3waylinks.net seems to be a new spin on... and... how to distance their product from what was/is known as "Circle Links" back in the old days.

Circle Links weren't limited to 3 one way links.

You could have 4, 5, 9..25 etc. sites participating in this ONE Way Links system.

Google picked up on that years ago and wrote an algorithm to sniff these groups out.

The only difference I see here is that, 3waylinks.net limits the one way links to 3.

It just a mini version of the now defunked in Google's eyes...Circle Links system.

So, since Google's spiders where programmed eons ago to seek out participates of Circle Links, I'm sure the bots can still trip over this mini version trend of one way links.

This is an excellent design. I left the site several times and came back to subconsicously measure the distractions. Couldn't get distracted from the content.

I've submitted to a lot of directories, I find they do generate back links. However there are an awful lot of directories out there that never seem to be indexed fully by the search engines. So only a small percentage of links show up.

I must admit Chirs, I think your comment is what is still swaying me toward the Revolution theme. I still personally think there is too much going on in the first fold.

I would prefer that the video spanned both columns ... we'll see.

Thanks for the comment.

You've created a unique blend of images and white space that do not distract from the content. There is that constant tension between drawing attention to the content and drawing attention to your monetization efforts.

Best of luck on your final decision.

Trish,
Thanks for the encouragement. It is important for us to NOT let the news scare us. There is always money to be made in a down market. According to a mentor of mine, if you offer exceptional service you will stand above the crowd. And, Zig Ziglar stated that during a down market sales people who don't listen to the news prosper because all the other sales people quit working.
